Atlas Obscura’s profiled the globe’s hidden gems for over a decade, detailing offbeat historical sites, trails, shops, natural wonders and eateries both in books and online. In 2016, the travel brand actually started visiting those places firsthand, and bringing interested guests along for the ride.
These days, AO’s full roster of guided trips is enormous, and includes a line of experiences the brand calls “Unique Trips to Extraordinary Places” — of which, we’d like to call your attention to one four-day adventure in particular, called Beyond the Quarter: Music and Reinvention in New Orleans.
The experience is captained by Jordan Hirsch, a NOLA native who’s dedicated a decade-and-a-half to chronicling the city’s twin pillars of music and cuisine. He led recovery efforts for neighborhood artists after Katrina, wrote for the HBO series Treme (which featured a guest-writing credit from Anthony Bourdain) and currently works with a foundation that preserves the oral histories of iconic local musicians.
And for four days this May, from the 14th through the 17th, he’s all yours. He’ll bring you, someone special and up to 10 others around the city for cocktails at a 19th-century eatery helmed by James Beard-winner Chris Hannah, Gulf seafood and gumbo, and intimate gigs at authentic haunts, including a chance to see Guitar Lightnin’ Lee, “the Prince of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues.”
