Doing your part to save the planet, perhaps now more than ever, is a matter of serious import.
If doing said part entails going to Leonardo DiCaprio’s resort and wildlife reserve, well, so be it.
Located off the coast of Belize on Blackadore Caye, DiCaprio’s Restorative Island eco resort will offer guests the opportunity to vacation in a luxurious tropical setting while also helping finance a revival of the area’s fragile ecosystem.
With an infrastructure developed by biologists and ecologists, Restorative Island will have 72 villas located on 104 acres of space, along with secluded beaches, grasslands and jungles.
The RI team plans to invest profits into restoring the island’s depleted ecosystem; here’s a rendering of the expected 30-year outlook:
To aid in the resort’s mission, invasive species will be removed, native species will be planted, the soil and aquatic habitat will be enhanced to improve conditions for reef and fish breeding, and half of the island will be kept as a protected wildlife preserve, according to CLAD News.
“With the onset of climate change, we want the structure to not only enhance and improve the environment, but to be a model for the future,” DiCaprio told The NY Times. “That includes restoring the island, creating conservation areas where we can hold research conferences, and regenerating the entire ecosystem to bring it back to its original form and beyond.”
The resort won’t open til 2018, but you can watch Leo’s climate change film in the meantime.
