Watching TV is one of the few readily available sources of entertainment left to us in a time of social distancing and self-isolation. Unfortunately, as I’ve previously noted, TV shows about people living their lives and interacting with other humans are lot harder to relate to when your own life and interpersonal interactions are limited to whatever domicile you’ve chosen to wait out the end times in and whatever fellow members of our doomed society are trapped there with you.
On the bright side, Netflix is creating a new show fit for our new socially distant hellscape, aptly titled Social Distance. The new anthology series is the latest project from the creators of Orange Is the New Black, and, in keeping with the theme of the show, will be written, produced and directed remotely.
“Our job as storytellers is to reflect reality, and in this new, bizarre, bewildering reality we are all experiencing, we feel passionate about finding connection as we all remain at a distance,” the show’s creators wrote in a tweet announcing the project on Tuesday. “We’ve been inspired to create an anthology series that tells stories about the current moment we are living through – the unique, personal, deeply human stories that illustrate how we are living apart, together.”
The creative team behind Orange Is the New Black have created Social Distance, a new anthology series about the experience of living in social distance. The series will be scripted and shot with crews working remotely and talent will film themselves.

Pioneering a new era of television production in the age of quarantine, Social Distance actors will film themselves at home, while writers, directors and showrunners all work remotely as well.
“The experience of social distancing is currently universal, but no individual story is the same,” the creators wrote. “Through a broad spectrum of tales and moments, some seismic and some mundane, we hope to capture a moment in time. And we hope that Social Distance will help people feel closer to one another.”
No release date for Social Distance has been announced yet, but hopefully some relatable television better suited for our sad, empty lives will be here soon.
