Late night comedian and Las Vegas native Jimmy Kimmel fought back tears Monday as he spoke to viewers about Sunday night’s horrific mass shooting, in which 59 people were killed and more than 500 were wounded at a country music festival in Las Vegas.

“I want this to be a comedy show. I hate talking about stuff like this. I just want to laugh about things every night. But it seems to becoming increasingly difficult lately. It feels like someone has opened a window into hell,” Kimmel said, noting that gun control legislation needs to be prioritized to stop killings like this from happening again.

“What I’m talking about tonight isn’t about gun control. It’s about common sense. Common sense says, ‘no good will ever come from allowing a person to have weapons that can take down 527 Americans at a concert.’”
