Over the course of its first four seasons, Peaky Blinders has traced the fortunes of Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, an obsessed figure looking for dominance in England’s criminal underworld. The show has abounded with fantastic actors and a rich attention to period detail. Also, there’s plenty of mayhem to be found, as well as beloved character actors sinking their teeth into meaty dialogue and occasionally engaging in gunplay.

Now, Netflix has released a trailer for the show’s fifth season, which includes plenty of mayhem, and a couple of beautifully-composed sequences, including one which appears to feature a crucified scarecrow and a flamethrower. What’s not to like?

Netflix’s summary of the season offers much to be excited about:

As the Shelbys grapple with the 1929 stock market crash, Tommy confronts new threats to his power from younger family members and fascist rivals.

In advance of the show’s UK debut, where it airs on the BBC, NME talked with the cast and crew about what to expect. Director Anthony Byrne weighted in on how the fifth season will differ from its predecessor.

“The last season was a gangster payoff gift to the audience of having loads of shootouts, which was a lot of fun,” he said. “This series was an opportunity to go back to the set-up that Steven Knight gave us in the first season and to go back to the inner workings of Tommy Shelby and what drives him and what haunts him.”

A plotline that finds Tommy Shelby dealing with both a turbulent financial market and the presence of fascism has more than a few areas where it might resonate with viewers in 2019. Fans of the show in the United States should have plenty to talk about when the fifth season debuts on Netflix on October 5th.
