Fresh off a stellar collaboration with L.L. Bean that flew off the shelves after being released last month, Todd Snyder is back with a fresh group effort produced in tandem with FootJoy that imagines how the top PGA pros from the ’60s and ’70s would look if they stepped onto the Tour day.
Launching May 19, the Blues Collection includes a sampling of polos, windbreakers, hoodies, cardigans, shorts, joggers, caps and golf shoes that are fit for playing 18 before heading over to the 19th hole for a post-round tipple.
Snyder, whose first pair of FootJoys were a hand-me-down from his father, previously partnered with the brand for a Spring 2021 collaboration that merged modern menswear with technical function and it received an overwhelmingly positive response. Based on that success, Synder says it was a “no-brainer” to go back to the drawing board for a second collection with FootJoy. To push the new capsule collection forward, Snyder examined the past.
“I had been looking at pictures of guys like Arnold Palmer and Chi-Chi Rodriguez, and there’s one of Palmer ripping a tee shot. He’s wearing blue trousers, a blue cardigan and a blue polo with the top button buttoned. He has this effortless cool that feels very relevant right now,” Snyder tells InsideHook. “I wanted to take some of those iconic styles — a cardigan, a pique polo — and refresh them with fabrics like our signature camo print.”
As Snyder explains, camouflage has become somewhat of a go-to for him
“Camo is a signature pattern for my brand and will more than often find its way into any collaboration I work on,” he says. “The pieces of this collection all have some sort of technical element and are made of the best quality fabrics — something that the golfer will appreciate on the course. The seersucker shorts and pants, which were a big hit last year, are made of stretch Italian cotton and have an elastic waistband for ultimate comfort. The polos are made from the performance fabric ProDry Pique which has state-of-the-art anti-wicking and anti-microbial technology and has this great soft somewhat silky hand feel.”
The prep-meets-performance collection is an example of American menswear evolving to match the somewhat consistent on-course style of golf, according to Snyder. “I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some of the most iconic American brands over the years and have created collections that reimagine how the modern American man can present themselves today,” he says. “The game of golf has evolved so much over the years and you see more and more people accessing the sport which is great. Regardless of your handicap, we wanted the collection to be accessible to anyone and meet the lifestyle of the modern gentleman on and off the course. That pushed me towards designing a collection that still honored classic American style and the game of golf, but had a refreshing take on style that was relevant to how people play the sport today.”
