Thank goodness for random Tokyo thrift shops. That’s where designer Steven Tiller stumbled upon a vintage SeaVees sneaker in 2005. Tiller did a little digging, discovered the Santa Barbara brand had been defunct since 1971, and promptly revived the label, launching a line of modish canvas silhouettes.

For our money, this is one of the best low-top “formal” sneakers out there come spring and summer. At its core, Vans makes skateboard shoes and Chuck Taylors are preferable in their OG high-top form. But SeaVees were originally conceived as beach-bar shoes. Wear these with no-show socks, below cuffed lightweight jeans, linen pants or chinos, and throw on a polo or T-shirt. You’re done.

We’ve included our four favorite styles below, all discounted up to $35.
