After risking losing sponsors following sustained public outcry about the name of his D.C.-based football team being a slur, Washington owner Daniel Snyder finally dropped the franchise’s name of 87 years in July.
Later, with the NFL season rapidly approaching, the club announced it would simply use the name Washington Football Team for 2020.
Though it was widely assumed the club would eventually change its name, Snyder told The Wall Street Journal “it’s possible” the franchise will simply stick with the Washington Football Team past 2020.
“If the Washington Football Team name catches on and our fans embrace it then we would be happy to have it as our permanent name,” he said. “I think we have developed a very classy retro look and feel.”
No decision has been made yet, and Snyder told the publication he doesn’t have a date in mind when he expects a final determination about what the team will ultimately be called.
Snyder’s team got off to a good start in the 2020 season as Washington upset the Philadelphia Eagles 27-17 on Sunday.
Peyton Barber ran for two touchdowns in the win and second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins rallied Washington from a 17-point deficit as the team scored 27 unanswered points. The defense also recorded eight sacks in Ron Rivera’s debut as head coach for the Washington Football Team.
If they keep winning games they shouldn’t, the name is going to stick.
