A Brazilian UFC star was injured after a grenade exploded near him on Christmas Eve.

Alex Oliveira was driving to buy gas for his mother’s car in his hometown of Tres Rios (a small town not far from Rio de Janeiro) when he saw some members of his family in an altercation.

After Oliveira stopped to investigate, a grenade was tossed in his direction and shrapnel got lodged in his leg when it exploded.

“One guy came up and pointed a gun at my nephew’s face, and that’s when people started pushing each other,” Oliveira told Brazil’s TV Rio Sul. “They had machetes, knives, a grenade. They threw a grenade in my direction. Fragments flew to my leg and my foot.”

Following the attack, the 30-year-old went to the hospital for minor surgery to have the fragments removed from his leg.

Oliveira, a welterweight, had his last fight of the year earlier this month at UFC 231 when he took on Conor McGregor’s training partner Gunnar Nelson. He has a 19-6 MMA record overall.
