In the midst of a roiling midterm Congressional campaign as well as the jarring aftermaths of a nationwide terrorist bombing campaign and a gun massacre at a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh, President Trump still found time to engage in a “Bob from Brooklyn on the carphone” sports rant on Saturday night. Commenting on Twitter during World Series Game 4, Trump questioned the Dodgers’s decision to remove Los Angeles starter Rich Hill, after which the Red Sox mounted a comeback to erase a four-run deficit and win 9–6.
In his post-game press conference, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts diplomatically fired back at his White House critic. Noting that Hill had actually requested Roberts watch his performance closely in the later innings and be prepared to pull him if he looked like he was about to get into trouble, Roberts questioned Trump’s knowledge of his team and the situation.
“The president said that?” Roberts asked reporters when informed about Trump’s comment. “I’m happy he was tuning in and watching the game. I don’t know how many Dodgers games he’s watched. I don’t think he was privy to the conversation. That’s one man’s opinion.”
