With 87 home runs through only 53 games this season, the New York Yankees are currently smashing dingers at a rate of 1.64 taters per game.
If they can keep up that pace, the Bronx Bombers will break the current record of 264 home runs the Seattle Mariners crushed over 162 games in 1997.
The question is, can they?
By the numbers, the Yankees are on pace to hit 271 home runs, which would only pass Seattle’s mark by seven homers, but would pass New York’s team record of 245 by 26 homers.
Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge are the Yankees best sources of power, but, in addition to them, the Yankees have two other hitters who have already hit double-digit homers and another four who are already halfway there.
Assuming Stanton and Judge stay healthy and productive and secondary hitters like Gary Sanchez and Didi Gregorius can produce as well, the Yankees may even have an outside shot at 300 home runs. Probably not, but it’s not off the table at this point.
“Based on the current numbers and reasonable projections, it’s conceivable New York will have 10 different hitters hit at least 10 home runs this season,” according to Yahoo. “It’s possible half of them will hit at least 25.”
Will that be enough to carry them past the Mariners? Unclear, but they’ve certainly got a shot.
