In the past five decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had three head coaches.
The third of them (following Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher), Mike Tomlin, will make sure that fact extends into a sixth decade as the 47-year-old coach and the team agreed to a contract extension which will keep him in the Steel City through at least 2021.
It’s no coincidence the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the only QB Tomlin has ever coached, also runs through 2021.
With 115 regular-season wins as a head coach-quarterback duo, Tomlin and Roethlisberger already sit atop Pittsburgh’s all-time list, ahead of the combination of Noll and Terry Bradshaw.
“I am very appreciative of this contract extension and opportunity and want to thank Art Rooney II and everyone in the organization for the support in my first 12 seasons,” Tomlin said in a statement. “We have a goal of winning the organization’s seventh Super Bowl championship, and I couldn’t be more excited about this upcoming season.”
Hired in 2007, Tomlin is the third-longest tenured coach in the NFL behind New England’s Bill Belichick and Sean Payton in New Orleans.
In Tomlin’s 12 years at the helm, Pittsburgh has never posted a losing record and has amassed an overall record of 125-66-1 (.654). The Steelers also have two Super Bowl appearances including one win (Super Bowl XLIII) during his tenure.
“Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we pursue our goal of winning another championship,” said team president Art Rooney II.
