The St. Louis Cardinals are the latest team in Major League Baseball to be shut down thanks to the coronavirus.
Seven St. Louis players and six staff members tested positive for COVID-19, causing MLB to postpone the team’s four-game series at Detroit.
“The Cardinals have had 13 members of the organization test positive for COVID-19 in the last week, including seven players and six staff members,” the league said in a statement. “The Club, which has been in quarantine since Thursday, will stay in Milwaukee and their personnel will continue to be tested daily. The tentative plan is for the team to resume its regular schedule on Friday against the Chicago Cubs in St. Louis.”
Of the Cardinals’ 13 cases, five are asymptomatic and eight have light symptoms, according to St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak.
“It’s a variety of symptoms, but nothing that requires hospitalization,” he said. “All these symptoms came after they tested positive.”
Mozeliak also addressed rumors and reports that some Cardinal players took an ill-advised trip to a casino before their COVID-19 outbreak.
“I have no factual reason to believe that is true, and I have not seen any proof of that. If they were at a casino, though, that would be disappointing,” he said.
On Monday, Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter delivered a mixed-message when he responded to reports that his team, which had 21 members of its traveling party including at least 18 players test positive for COVID-19, had behaved recklessly while on the road in Atlanta.
“Our guys were not running all around town in Atlanta,” he said. “We did have a couple of individuals leave the hotel. We had guys leave to get coffee, to get clothes. There was no hanging out at bars, no clubs, no running around Atlanta … Guys were around each other, they got relaxed and they let their guard down. They were getting together in groups. They weren’t wearing masks as much as they should have. They weren’t social distancing. The entire traveling party got a little too comfortable.”
In other MLB cancellation news, the league announced its Field of Dreams game in Iowa has been postponed until 2021 because of the coronavirus.
