San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich called President Donald Trump a “soulless coward who thinks he can only become large by belittling others,” after Trump made a false claim that former presidents did not call the families of fallen soldiers.
According to SB Nation, Trump was asked about why he hadn’t mentioned four United States soldiers being ambushed in Niger. The president responded by saying, “A lot of [former presidents] didn’t make calls. I like to call when it’s appropriate, when I think I’m able to do it.”
Popovich, who has a background in the military, heard these comments and reached out to The Nation’s Dave Zirin, saying that he was “amazed and disappointed by so much” of what Trump has said and his actions since becoming president. According to SB Nation, he said that Trump’s approach is one of “never-ending divisiveness.”
Popovich said that the people working for this president should be ashamed because they know “just how unfit he is” but do nothing about it. According to SB Nation, Popovich said, “We have a pathological liar in the White House: unfit intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically to hold this office and the whole world knows it, especially those around him every day.”
This isn’t the first time Popovich has commented on Trump. He previously said that the election’s results gave him a “sick stomach.” When Trump rescinded the Warriors’ invitation to the White House, Popovich said it was “comical” because the team wasn’t going anyway.
Other NBA coaches and players have come out and spoken against Trump, including Steve Kerr, LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
