The Mayweather-McGregor bout was touted as one of the greatest matchups in the history of boxing. And while Conor McGregor got a 10-round beating, which ended in a TKO in favor of Floyd Mayweather, some fans who paid $99.99 to watch the pay-per-view fight last Saturday night were met with an even more formidable opponent: finicky technology (or lack thereof).
In short, a number of fans who tried to stream the event via Showtime’s app ran into problems like video quality issues, buffering problems, and error messages. (Per Variety, technical issues via the app kept streamers from watching the first 10 minutes of the fight.)
According to The Hollywood Reporter, that has led to a class-action lawsuit alleging that Showtime knew it had faulty technology but brought it to market anyway—all at its customers’ expense. (You can read the lawsuit by clicking on the THR link.)
As Variety notes, Showtime says it will issue refunds to any fan who purchased the streamable, pay-per-view option directly from the company. But if they did so from another provider, they’d have to take it up with them.
