At the end of the month, former Seattle SuperSonic Shawn Kemp is opening a business that is almost sure to be a slam dunk with the local cannabis community.
The 50-year-old Reign Man is opening Shawn Kemp’s Cannabis, which will be Seattle’s first Black-owned dispensary, on October 30.
Kemp will be joined at the store’s opening by former teammate Gary Payton, who already has a cannabis company of his own called CannaSports.
In a press release, Kemp said he looks forward to being a role model for future license recipients through Washington’s upcoming social equity program, which was created earlier this year.
“I hope that Shawn Kemp’s Cannabis will be an inspiration for people to get involved with the legal cannabis industry, especially people of color,” Kemp said. “My name is on this company and I have worked hard to bring Shawn Kemp’s Cannabis to fruition. I want to provide nothing short of the best selection, customer experience and prices in Seattle.”
With nearly 4,000 square feet of space, the store is instantly recognizable thanks to a 30-by-80-foot mural on its exterior of Kemp playing in a Sonics uniform.
A six-time All Star, Kemp spent the first eight years of his 14-year NBA career with the Sonics and now calls Seattle home.
