According to Andrew Marchand of The New York Post, some massive changes may be in store for ESPN Radio, among them afternoon host Will Cain departing the Worldwide Leader for a role at Fox News.
Though there is no timeline in place for Cain, who hosts the 3-6 p.m. daily program for ESPN, his departure from the network “appears imminent” and he is expected to sign a contract with Fox News and Fox Nation soon, according to Marchand’s sources.
Marchand’s report comes weeks after Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports also hinted Cain could be leaving ESPN in order to return to doing political commentary. “Sources say Will Cain could be on the move from ESPN; possibly to Fox News,” McCarthy wrote on Twitter on April 10. “It would make sense. Cain cut his teeth in politics before switching to sports. Ex-ESPNer Britt McHenry is over at Fox Nation.”
Prior to joining ESPN, Cain spent time at a number of conservative media outlets including The National Review and Glenn Beck’s The Blaze. A 45-year-old Texan who has never made his right-wing leanings a secret, Cain found success at ESPN by offering a conservative viewpoint while debating other network hosts like Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman.
“Has being conservative helped me since I’ve been here?” Cain said to The Washington Post in 2018. “Of course. ESPN doesn’t have a voice like mine.”
A move could be beneficial for Cain as some of his colleagues feel he’s equipped to debate social and political issues, but not sports.
“If it’s a sports conversation, he can’t hang — it’s like a train running over somebody,” Smith said.
In his piece, Marchand also reported that Dan Le Batard may also be taken out of ESPN’s radio lineup as well, at least partially because of his refusal not to simply stick to talking about sports.
