The San Diego Padres are in the middle of a power surge that has never been seen before in the history of Major League Baseball.
On Thursday night, Eric Hosmer smashed a grand slam off Kyle Gibson in the fifth inning against the Texas Rangers, making the San Diego Padres the first team in MLB history to hit a grand salami in four straight games. All four of the grand slams were off Texas pitchers.
Hosmer’s shot off Gibson gave the Padres a 5-2 lead, and San Diego went on to win the game 8-7.
The streak began on Monday when Fernando Tatis swung on a 3-0 pitch with the Padres leading by seven runs and launched it to the moon. Will Myers continued the streak with a slam in a 6-4 win at Texas on Tuesday and Manny Machado hit a walkoff slam in the 10th inning Wednesday night for a 6-3 win.
Both Tatis and Machado were aboard for Hosmer’s historic shot on Thursday.
In addition to being historic, Hosmer’s home run also, bear with us now, resulted in CBS sportswriter Danny Vietti running around Sacramento in a diaper.
“I think we’ll be looking for the Twitter pictures and all that,” Hosmer said of Vietti’s promise. “So hopefully whoever it is sticks to their word.”
