Check Out the NHL’s New Reverse Retro 2022 Jerseys by Adidas

Set to hit the ice this season, a new line of hockey sweaters that call back to Stanley Cup-winning seasons of the past and beloved logos from bygone eras is coming to the National Hockey League. Debuting in November, the NHL’s Reverse Retro 2022 ADIZERO jerseys were designed by Adidas in tandem with the league and individual teams. An opportunity to reinvent iconic designs and call back to nostalgic NHL moments, the Reverse Retro jerseys are the result of an extensive collaboration process that determined the most sought-after and creative looks for each team, according to Adidas Hockey senior director Dan Near.

“It’s always exciting to go through this process because each jersey is like a time capsule to an incredible moment in a franchise’s history,” Near tells InsideHook. “Those nostalgic nods mixed with modern design choices are really the secret sauce for Reverse Retro.”

With some insights on the design process from Near, here’s a look at our 10 favorite Reverse Retro jerseys that the NHL and Adidas stitched up for the 2022-23 season. (Find a favorite? Head to Adidas or the NHL to cop it on November 15.)

We made a concerted effort to create more jerseys with a white base this year to facilitate more Reverse Retro matchups during the season. This brilliant Kings jersey, a revamp of the 1982 classic, is one of the beneficiaries of that effort.

We’ve had some really fun projects with Toronto recently, including the Drew House/Justin Bieber collaboration on their third uniform. This is yet another, honoring their 1962 Stanley Cup-winning uniform.

We’re really proud of this jersey. Our team did an excellent job of incorporating the iconic state flag and paying homage to the Rocky Mountains. A design that’s worthy of the defending champs.

No design aspect was more requested after Reverse Retro 2020 than the Islanders’ classic “Fisherman” logo. The fans demanded it and we’re excited to deliver for the 50^thanniversary of the Islanders.

This is a really fun one. It remixes the current Devils’ uniforms with the iconic Colorado Rockies colorway. This one celebrates another anniversary as it’s been 40 years since the Rockies were an NHL team.

True to the franchise’s long history, Chicago’s jersey is inspired by one of the oldest legacy uniforms in this year’s group: their 1938 “barbershop pole” jersey. This one really embodies the concept of “Reverse Retro,” as we reversed the Black and Red color positions from the classic edition.

Another clean white look from this year’s collection, this is a historic remix that honors the Flyers’ 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup Championships. The slight accents of orange really stand out on this jersey, given its predominantly black-and-white colorway.

This is one of those classic ‘90s looks, with the big logo and the wide stripes crossing the edges. Everyone loves the “Screaming Eagle,” and now they can see it in Capital blue and metallic copper.

We knew this was going to be a highly-requested design because it’s simply iconic. The Bruins 1995 uniform was gold and we’ve remixed it in white, but the star of the show here is that legendary “Pooh Bear” logo.

Many of our jerseys reenergize classic logos like the “Lady Liberty” you see on this year’s Rangers edition. This time, she’s back with an exciting twist in the new red color-blocking and navy stripes.

Our explorations start in authenticity and Tampa Bay embraced this nostalgic design wholeheartedly. They really recognized that these jerseys represent a moment in time and they decided to shoot for the moon. It’s a risk, but it’s one I admire. I think it’s going to be popular.
