If the results of last Saturday’s Canelo-GGG fight left you with a bad taste in your mouth, you’re not alone; the split-decision draw has sent ripples throughout the boxing world, with countless fans and experts crying foul.
Now, the offending judge, Adalaide Byrd, who controversially scored the Las Vegas bout in favor of Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez over his opponent Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin—giving him a 118-110, compared to fellow judge’s 115-113 in the opposite direction. (The third judge scored the match a tie.) The fight’s promoters probably aren’t all that up in arms about the fight’s outcome, because the split-decision draw will mean a Canelo-GGG: Part Deux.
As Bob Bennett, the executive director of the Nevada Athletic State Commission, told The Independent, Byrd would be temporarily suspended given a “small break.” “I’m not going to put her right back in. …She’ll still be in the business, but she needs to catch her breath.”
Golovkin was clearly not pleased with the results, saying Byrd’s decision “[was] not good for the sport of boxing.”
