At the University Ridge Golf Course in Wisconsin over the weekend, it was Jack Nicklaus, not Brett Favre, who was the big cheese.

The Hall-of-Fame golfer and Hall-of-Fame quarterback hit the course together at the fourth annual American Family Insurance Championship and drew a large crowd. Nicklaus, 79, and Favre, 49, played together in a foursome that also included two-time U.S. Open champ Andy North (a Wisconsin native) and country music star Toby Keith.

Everyone, including Favre, was delighted to see Nicklaus make his first golfing appearance in Wisconsin since the 1985 Greater Milwaukee Open.

“The only way I can describe it is being a priest and serving mass with the Pope,” Favre told Madison.com. “It’s got to be a thrill to do that. I’m obviously not a golfer. I’m a Sunday golfer, like most of us. This is an extreme honor.”

Favre also threw cold water on the notion that he’d be returning to the football field.

“Yeah, the last thing I want to do is stir the pot,” he said. “That’s the last thing I want to do is come back and play. No offense, but it was fun, then. I’m not coming back.”

Nicklaus, who now does about 20 speaking engagements a year, also won’t be coming back to his former profession other than for charity events.

“Last time I actually played a round of golf and putted every putt out was 2005,” Nicklaus said.
