One of the least-surprising developments in the NFL is now official. On Saturday, the Houston Texans and star quarterback Deshaun Watson agreed on a mega-extension worth $160 million over four years.
The deal will be added to Watson’s existing two-year deal, keeping him as a Texan for the next six seasons for a total of $177.5 million. For Watson, this was a no-brainer, as he has been adamant about his commitment to the Texans organization for months now.
According to The Houston Chronicle, the two parties started talking about the extension back in February at the scouting combine. That Houston traded away Watson’s favorite target in DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona for running back David Johnson this off-season was apparently not enough to sway the young quarterback from re-signing with the team.
In a statement, Watson thanks Texans ownership for helping make his dream of playing in the NFL and staying with the only team he knows a reality:
Today, I couldn’t be more honored and humbled to sign a long-term deal in Houston, the city that I’ve grown to love so much and now call my home. Thanks to Cal, Janice, the entire McNair family, Coach O’Brien, Jack Easterby and the whole Texans’ organization for helping to make my dream a reality.

Watson is the second star quarterback to get a mega-deal this off-season, after Kansas City locked in Pat Mahomes for a whopping 10 years and $477.6 million. Watson’s deal isn’t that massive, but his new pay puts him in line with other elite quarterbacks in the league.
