After scandal forced him to resign from his top-rated morning show on WFAN in 2017, sports talk host extraordinaire Craig Carton is nearing a return to the airwaves in New York City, according to The New York Post.
Carton, the subject of a recent HBO documentary about his fall from fame and rise back to redemption while serving time for a Ponzi scheme, is hoping to debut his new program next month, according to Post sources.
The move was a long time coming after Chris Oliviero, who worked as Carton’s producer two decades ago, was hired to oversee WFAN in May. Before taking the job, Oliviero asked Entercom executives if he could bring back Carton if the timing was right.
“If a time in the future came where Craig had gotten his life back on track, fulfilled all that was asked of him and was in a position to resume his career, of course we’d talk and discuss,” Oliviero told Newsday shortly before Carton’s release from prison in June.
With current afternoon host Joe Benigno set to retire from being a full-time host soon, the time appears to be now.
Once he returns to the air, Carton will have to contend with competing with ESPN New York’s The Michael Kay Show as well as paying his debtors back nearly $5 million.
