Roger Goodell’s contract extension as NFL Commissioner comes with controversy over the particulars of his contract, according to USA Today.
Through a letter written by his attorney, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones raged against Goodell’s extension, saying that team owners have been misled about his contract. In particular, the letter points out an allegedly-undisclosed discretionary bonus plan, which is described as “a substantial commitment by the Owners, as more than $200 million is at stake, on top of the $200 million already paid to [Goodell].” The letter also quotes the NFLs compensation committee, which allegedly called Goodell’s contract “the most one-sided deal they have ever seen.”
The letter also indirectly questions Goodell’s overall leadership, pointing to “[an] avalanche of issues that have beleaguered the NFL unlike any other time in recent memory. These changing conditions must be weighed relative to the timing of the Commissioner’s contract extension.”
