The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced its inductees for 2021 — and among the 8 men chosen for it are 3 selected in their first year of eligibility. Those 3 would be Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson and Calvin Johnson — which also adds Woodson to the rarefied group of Heisman Trophy winners elected to the Hall of Fame.
Also selected to the Hall of Fame this year? Alan Faneca, John Lynch, Tom Flores, Bill Nunn and Drew Pearson. Nunn’s work as a scout helped to raise the profile of HBCUs within the NFL, and his work for the Pittsburgh Steelers helped build one of the most formidable NFL teams of all time.
ESPN’s report on the inductees notes that in 1974, Nunn’s work led to the Steelers drafting Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Jack Lambert and Mike Webster — and then signing Donnie Shell after he went undrafted. All 5 players are now in the Hall of Fame.
One more interesting statistic about the class of 2021: Flores is one of two Hall of Famers who have won Super Bowls as players, head coaches and assistant coaches. The other is Mike Ditka.
This year’s induction is scheduled to take place from August 5 through August 9. Those festivities will also include enshrining the 2020 Hall of Fame inductees and the Centennial Class of Hall of Famers named last year. The 2020 ceremony was canceled due to the pandemic. Hopefully, this year will be more amenable to hosting such a wide-ranging event.
