Former NFL offensive lineman Jonathan Martin is headed to trial to face felony charges related to a threatening post he made on his Instagram account in February of last year.
Martin, who was the victim of bullying by offensive lineman Richie Incognito and made national headlines for it when they were both with the Miami Dolphins, went to Los Angeles-area high school Harvard-Westlake.
Last February, Martin posted an image of a shotgun and ammunition and also included hashtags for his former school. He also tagged the accounts of Incognito and former Dolphins teammate Mike Pouncey and included the caption: “When you’re a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide, or revenge.”
The Parkland school shooting that took the lives of 17 people was nine days before Martin’s post so Harvard-Westlake closed temporarily in response to the Instagram post.
Following the post, 29-year-old Martin was detained for questioning and then released by the Los Angeles Police Department.
The former NFLer, who revealed he suffered from depression and had tried to kill himself on multiple occasions in the wake of the bullying scandal, checked himself into a mental health facility following his release.
Martin, who hasn’t played in the NFL since being cut in 2015, is scheduled to appear in court on January 30.
