The storm of controversy surrounding the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf tour shows no signs of abating, with an increasing number of prominent sports figures outside of golf weighing in on the ethics of the tour. Earlier this month, Charles Barkley offered his take on the controversy. This week, it was NFL great Boomer Esiason’s turn. And it was — shall we say — candid.

As Kevin Cunningham at Golf reports, Esiason’s comments were made on his WFAN show Boomer and Gio and addressed the competition taking place this weekend at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster.

“The former president’s hosting this garbage over there, and those guys are accepting this money — it’s an insult to all the people that died on 9/11 and how their families were affected,” Esiason said. “But it’s also an insult to all the people who have died since 9/11 because of all of the toxic carcinogens that they basically ingested while they were trying to clean this place up, to make it look like what it looks like now.”

“They can kiss my ass,” Esiason added. “I’m not watching it. I don’t care. They can sportswash it. They can explain it any way they want.”

Esiason went on to cite Matthew John Bocchi’s memoir Sway, in which Bocchi wrote about the impact of the attacks on his family. Bocchi himself has been highly critical of LIV Golf and of the former president for hosting their events.

Even as the backlash to the LIV Golf tour continues, it appears to be expanding its roster. This controversy shows no signs of abating any time soon.
