With No Triple Crown Contender, Wide Open Field at Belmont Stakes

New York Post predicts Tapwrit will take 149th running of horse race.

Since neither of the winners of the previous Triple Crown legs are running in this Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, the field is wider open than usual.

And that means either the 149th running of the iconic horse race will either be exciting or a letdown—depending on a fan’s point of view.

Certainly, with Always Dreaming and Cloud Computing, the odds are much more wide-open than in years past.

The New York Post‘s pick for the overall winner is Tapwrit (6-1), despite the fact that he “got clobbered out of the gate in Kentucky.” Twisted Tom (20-1) is their pick for second, even though Tom is on a three-race winning streak and is an extremely valuable competitor.

Irish War Cry (7-2) is the paper’s pick for third, based largely on his Wood Memorial victory. J Boys Echo (15-1) is predicted for fourth place.

The big race starts at approximately 6:57pm on Saturday (post time approximately 6:30pm), and will air on NBC.
