Top MLB outfield prospect Ronald Acuna is many things, but unsure of himself isn’t one of ‘em.
“I want to be like Mike Trout,” Acuna told ESPN. “I want to be at that level. I want to be great. I want to get to the big leagues, stay in the big leagues, and play for a lot of years. Everything that comes with it. Be an All-Star, win championships, all that.”
On Wednesday, Acuna will take the first step in that journey when he joins the Atlanta Braves.
Ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in baseball behind Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani, Acuna has spent the first portion of the season with Triple-A Gwinnett.
Although he’s only hit .232 with one homer and two RBIs in 69 at-bats at Triple-A this month, the 20-year-old was excellent in spring training with four homers and four stolen bases while batting .432 in 16 games.
That performance had Acuna drawing comparisons not to Trout, but to someone else.
“He reminds me of Ken Griffey Jr.,” said says Acuna’s agent Peter Greenberg. “From the moment he gets to the park, he’s having fun.”
