After a hard-fought Game 7 victory in the American League Championship Series versus the New York Yankees, the Houston Astros advanced the World Series this past Saturday. They did it, topping off a season in which they won 101 games. And they’ll now be facing a formidable Los Angeles Dodgers team that bested their wins total by three games.
According to SB Nation, this is the first postseason matchup to feature two 100-win teams since 1977, when the Yankees, who had 100 wins, beat the Kansas City Royals, who had won 102 games, in the ALCS. The last time two 100-winners met in the Series? All the way back in 1970, when the 108-game-winning Baltimore Orioles—which featured future Hall of Famers Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, and Jim Palmer—took on the 102-game-winning Cincinnati Reds, whose dugout included HOFers Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, as well as all-time hits leader Pete Rose.
In all, there have been eight World Series that have featured 100-plus game winners, including this year’s series. These include: 191o – Athletics (102-48) versus the Chicago Cubs (104-50); 1912 – the Boston Red Sox (105-47) versus the New York Giants (103-48); 1931 – St. Louis Cardinals (101-53) versus the Philadelphia Athletics (107-45); 1941 – New York Yankees (101-53) versus the Brooklyn Dodgers (100-54); 1942 – St. Louis Cardinals (106-48) versus the New York Yankees (103-51); 1969 – “The Miracle” New York Mets (100-62) versus the Baltimore Orioles (109-53); and 1970 (see above).
