The New Range Rover Just Declared War Against All Other Mid-Size SUVs

Don't be fooled by its gentle looks. This car goes anywhere.

The 2018 Velar — aka the fastest Range Rover ever made — has arrived.

Somewhere between the Sport and the Evoque in size, the Velar will pack gangbusters amounts of power while retaining the coupe-esque, aerodynamic lines of those two vehicles. And that’s just not for looks: with a drag coefficient of just 0.32, it’s also their smoothest make yet.

But it’s still a Rover. So we’re still talking 10 inches of ground clearance, optional air suspension and the ability to best up to 25 inches of water. And, of course, all the creature comforts we’ve come to expect: a 10-inch touchscreen embedded into the center console (so no buttons or knobs), climate control for every seat and ultra-soft (environmentally-friendly?) leather. Yes, sustainable upholstery is an option. About the only good thing for Ma Earth this ride’s packin’, though.

Because under the hood you’ve got a four-cylinder turbodiesel rated with 180 ponies and a padded 317 pound-feet of torque. On the horizon is a 247-horsepower gas-powered turbo and a V6 with 380 horsepower. All in all, that means 60 mph in an alarming 5.3 seconds. Hold onto your hats.

Starting at $49.9k, it’s certain to get the kids to practice on time.
