Yes, we should have planned our diet and exercise routine better before summer started.
But don’t fret. Just take a deep breath — literally.
Because that’s the magic behind Lumen, a nutritionist and trainer housed in a tiny, smartphone-connected device, launching today.
Lumen promises to plan and monitor a healthier lifestyle for you. All you have to do is exhale into the device a few times per day. Too good to be true? We took a closer look.
The idea behind Lumen was to make a device that could easily track your metabolism while still being small enough to carry in your bag. You simply breathe into the tracker in the morning or before a workout, and through AI assistance and a corresponding app, you’ll receive a daily nutrition or exercise plan tailored to both your diet goals and your own metabolism (which could be affected by factors like age, weight, genetics, etc.).
As you keep using it, Lumen will offer more nutrition advice and specific daily goals for carb consumption. There’s also a “food search” feature that allows you to determine the amount of carbs in particular foods, as well as nutritionists on call who can evaluate your food choices.
So … is Lumen a Holy Grail of weight loss?
While we were able to briefly see the device and talk to one of the hundreds of beta users before its release, we can’t say for certain if it works — though the Israeli company, which has been working on Lumen for four years, does claim the 300 beta testers lost an average of 6.8 pounds in 30 days.
And, to be fair, it’s certainly a more convenient way to track metabolic measurements than what’s on the market, as well as see the immediate impact of what you’ve eaten.
At the very least, the constact tracking and feedback regarding your meals and exercise should help you reach your goals. Because it’s more than an app, the physical nature of the device itself serves as a constant reminder to stay the healthy course.
Lumen launches today on Indiegogo for $179, or 40% off the future retail price.
