Cool mornings. Blazing hot days. Crisp nights.
Our summertime coastal climate is about as predictable as a metronome — but that doesn’t make it any easier to dress for.
So to help you look effortlessly put together no matter the situation, we tapped Devin McGovern, the style maven behind Outlined Cloth, to pick out a head-turner of a morning-to-night look.
By day, Devin produces Spike’s Bar Rescue; Outlined Cloth is his passion project, a style blog and Instagram account that nails the natural tones and rugged appeal of the Southern California heritage vibe. He is one of SoCal’s true ambassadors of leisure.
When asked why he picked what he did, he said rather simply, “I chose those items because they are comfortable.”
Here’s how he rolls to the beach.
The Base Layers
San Juan Capistrano-based Freenote Cloth released a limited run of olive chinos stitched with deadstock fabric the U.S. Military used in uniforms for the Korean War. “As I was walking down to the beach, adventuring around the water, I wanted the comfy long pants,” he says. “I packed the shorts for the beach in my backpack.”
The T-shirt is from Richer or Poorer, another OC company that started out making fun socks and has now added soft pocket tees to their arsenal of must-have basics. “The tee is a go-to for summer,” he says. Then he threw Freenote’s colorful new Hawaiian print over the top.
On the Dome
Outlined Cloth’s wool OC hat is a recent collaboration Devin did with Knickerbocker. Keeps the sun off your neck by day and your noggin warm once the sea breeze rolls in. And for blocking out the rays, Devin likes Shwood’s Sea Collection. Shwood’s wood-framed sunnies are lightweight but inexpensive, so if you lose them it’s not the end of the world. Pacific Northwest motifs for a pop of color and polarized lenses to help with the glare.
The Bag
