Big Sur’s Swankiest Resort Opened a Campsite, and It’s Bananas

Ocean. Redwoods. Safari tents. Get some.

Look: Valentine’s Day is gonna burn a hole in your wallet no matter which way you spin it.

Might as well burn that hole doing something epic.

Something like the uber-swanky Ventana Big Sur’s new Redwood Canyon Glampsite, where you can trade in 9-to-5 drudgery for an otherworldly convergence of ocean, canyons and Redwoods.

The Ventana Big Sur is the newly dubbed remodel of the Ventana Inn & Spa, a storied California guesthouse that originally opened in 1975. But you’re not staying at the hotel. You’re headed to the camping ground, which is located about 20 minutes by car from Pfeiffer Beach.

First things first: if your skin crawled a bit at the mention of a “glampsite,” you’re not alone. It’s not too far in DNA from “pumpkin spice” and “avocado toast.”

But Redwood Canyon, nestled in a 20-acre canyon and featuring 15 tents straight out of Hemingway, is definitely worth your attention. In a way, it’s a microcosm of Big Sur itself, matching untamed ruggedness with unmatched splendor.

Amenities? Try Adirondack chairs, ice chests, picnic baskets, fire pits, lanterns, walking sticks, hot cocoa … you name it. Most importantly, in order to combat your musty, woods-born aroma, the site added a Bath House with teak showers and heated floors. Visitors can also attend wine and cheese tastings at night, or head over to the main Ventana resort during the day, which has a spa, pools and a fitness center for an additional fee.

But we recommend catching up on some much-needed, uh, interaction with your loved one in that luxurious tent.

And did we mention the nightly turndown s’mores service?

Beats the hell out of a conversation heart, that’s for sure.
