From AI-powered sex dolls to multi-platform virtual camgirls, technology is giving living, breathing women some competition in the bedroom, and apparently a future world of entirely digital women is the stuff of some men’s dreams.
As Emma Grey Ellis noted in a recent feature in Wired on Projekt Melody which claims to be “the world’s first hentai camgirl,” certain circles of virtual-porn enthusiasts are becoming increasingly attracted to the idea of a world without real women. According to Ellis, “Most Melody-based memes swirl around the same theme: the idea that virtual women are the future, an upgrade to flesh and blood.” Popular slogans in these circles call for Melody fans and similar fandoms to “reject tradition, embrace modernity” by choosing “bots not thots.”
Members of these groups are often identified as “digisexuals,” or people who express their sexual identity through technology. This, Ellis explained, could manifest as an attraction to robots, or increasingly it seems, to “technologically mediated avatars” like Melody, whose multi-platform reign covers Twitter, YouTube, Patreon and PornHub.
Unsurprisingly, as Ellis pointed out, these digisexual fanbases have a tendency to overlap with more overtly misogynistic groups and beliefs.
According to Reddit user xhumanist, who moderates the subreddit community r/digisexuals, hypersexualized bots like Melody cater to “the wishes of a large and growing segment of society, particularly among males, who see the digital world as holding more promise for satisfying their sexual and emotional needs than real life.” As xhumanist told Ellis, “The reason for her success is likely because digisexuals are hoping for a glimpse of the future.”
That future, it seems, is one where flesh and blood women eventually disappear entirely in favor of their high-tech fictional counterparts.
