We recently detailed the harmful effects popular sunscreens have on the ocean. When you wear sunscreen that contains the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate while swimming, surfing or snorkeling near coral reef, the chemicals can cause the reef to become sick, “bleach” and die.

Hawaii and the Florida Keys have passed laws banning sunscreens that use these destructive chemicals, but those won’t come into effect until 2021. Still, that’s no excuse not to make the switch to a more sustainable, reef-saving option this summer. Especially since there are tons of planet-friendly alternatives on the market made with minerals like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which function as safe, effective alternatives to oxybenzone and octinoxate.

To help you make the switch, we rounded up ten of them below. Our ocean and David Attenborough will thank you.
