It seems like a rip-off, right? Tear into a whole package of chips and get one measley triangle-shaped thing?
The Carolina Reaper Madness is sold one per package. And each package, by the way, comes in its own coffin-shaped box.
Reason being: The chip is hot. Insane. It’s the world’s hottest tortilla chip, according to the manufacturers, Paqui, and we’re in no position to argue the point. The chip’s extreme spice comes from the Carolina Reaper pepper, the current world’s record holder for the Hottest Chili Pepper on Earth. But that wasn’t enough for the sadists at Paqui, who threw in some ghost pepper and chipotle seasoning to amp it up a bit further.
But just one? That seems a little miserly. But according to Jeff Day, the Brand Manager for Paqui Chips, one is all you need.
“It’s the hottest chip you’ll ever have, I can guarantee you that,” Day told Mashable. “After you eat that one chip, trust me, you’re not looking to dig back into the bag and have a second one.”
Day also offered some words of wisdom to anyone brave enough to try the Carolina Reaper Madness: follow it with milk, yogurt or ice cream to balance out the heat. And don’t wash it down with water unless you want to spread the heat and make the experience more painful for yourself.
