According to Norwegian madcap architecture firm Snøhetta (who we’ve covered here and here before), Europe’s first underwater restaurant is coming.
And by the looks of it, it’s gonna be a stunner.
“In Norwegian, the word ‘under’ can just as well be translated into ‘wonder,’” Snøhetta said in a statement. “More than an aquarium, the structure will become a part of its marine environment.”
Meant to act as an eatery, aquarium and marine research center, Under will be located along the southern coast of Norway with its floor resting directly on the seabed at a depth of more than 50 feet. Made from coarse concrete, the building’s underwater exterior will encourage mussels to attach themselves to create an artificial reef.
From the tide pools at the surface to the 100-seat dining room at the bottom, Snøhetta envisions that Under will serve as a “concrete periscope” with the restaurant’s panoramic acrylic window offering views of the seabed and the marine life within it.
