The surrealist Salvador Dalí‘s work had an endless capacity to surprise, but this one still took us for a loop: He made a cookbook. Published in 1973, it is being reissued by Taschen, and you can take an advance look at it here.
Dalí and his wife Gala were famed for their lavish dinner parties, so he clearly had a fondness for food. Yet it’s still impressive just how extensive this cookbook proved to be, with 136 recipes spread over 12 chapters. (And yes, you can cook them, though some require skill and a well-stocked pantry.)
The book also features Dalí’s undeniable voice: “If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment, close this book at once; it is too lively, too aggressive, and far too impertinent for you.” But, of course, the greatest draw is the art.
