Up there with platinum, gold and whale vomit, Pappy Van Winkle whiskey is one of the most valuable and coveted substances on Earth. So when we get word that some of it will become available, we attempt to get that news to you ASAP so you can begin collecting funds and making travel plans. Here’s the 411.
In April, Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery will release a one-time bottling of 25-year-old bourbon distilled in the spring and fall of 1989 for $1,800 per 750-ml bottle, BourbonBlog reported. Made from 11 barrels aged at the Van Winkle family distillery and Buffalo Trace’s campus, the bourbon in the 710 bottles has been in stainless steel tanks to halt the aging process since 2014.
Encased in handmade glass decanters topped with silver stopper, the 25-year-old Pappy comes in a wooden box crafted from the 11 barrels that held the hooch for a quarter of a century. To prove they’re legit, each box has a plaque and contains a certificate of authenticity numbered and signed by Pappy president Julian Van Winkle.
“This is a once in a lifetime offering,” Van Winkle said of the upcoming release. “We are excited to be able to offer something so unique and rare for our most devoted fans.”
As for where to find them? The Van Winkles are notoriously tight-lipped about who gets the Pappy, how much and why, but this liquore store release map and this bar tracker are good places to start.
Given what substantially younger Pappy costs, we recommend bribing your local liquor provider posthaste.
