CNBC’s Zack Guzman was understandably skeptical when he heard about Old Homestead Steakhouse’s $76,000 Thanksgiving dinner. Considering that a 10-person Thanksgiving dinner costs about $50 on average, Old Homestead’s price seems even more insane than it already is.
So, in the interests of journalism, Guzman tried it himself.
Much of the price, it seems, comes from the ingredients. The meal includes $475-per-pound imported Wagyu beef lollipops, $3,300 Pappy Van Winkle bourbon-infused gravy, $100 imported king oysters, and $1,600-per-ounce black caviar, along with the usual Thanksgiving staples of turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes.
The dinner’s pricetag also included four tickets to Hamilton with limo service, and two nights at the Mandarin Oriental, in a suite overlooking Central Park. There were other amenities as well, to the point where Guzman almost seems embarrassed recounting them.
Ultimately, Guzman feels a little weird spending 5 figures on Thanksgiving without his friends and family there. That’s not to say he wouldn’t do the whole thing again (on someone else’s dime, preferably), but that kind of indulgence isn’t what the holiday’s really about. To Guzman, the people make the food in more ways that one.
