The signature Walther PPK pistol wielded by Sean Connery as James Bond in 007’s cinematic debut will be auctioned in December — except it’s not actually a PPK. While the PPK has become one of many integral pieces of the James Bond iconography, the actual prop used in Dr. No was the Walther PP.
The prop, which has a slightly longer build than the handgun it’s meant to portray in the film, is set to be auctioned next month at the upcoming “Icons & Idols Trilogy: Hollywood” sale, hosted by Julien’s Auctions. The gun is expected to fetch $200,000, according to CNN.
“In the cinematic debut of the character of James Bond, Connery uses this hero weapon throughout the film and helped to establish and define the character that has been featured in books, films, and other media for the past nearly six decades,” the auction house said in a press release.
The auction follows Connery’s death last month at age 90.
“The silhouette of 007 holding this gun would go on to become the James Bond franchise’s most iconic image and one of the most recognizable pop culture references of all time,” Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions, said in a statement. “We are honored to include his Walther PP Pistol as our auction’s headlining item along with hundreds of other historical memorabilia from Hollywood’s greatest classic films and television series.”
The gun, which will come with a certificate of deactivation and a letter of provenance from UK-based prop house Bapty, will join over 500 other iconic items from top Hollywood films including props from Top Gun, Terminator and Pulp Fiction.
The auction will take place in Beverly Hills and online on December 3.
