The Minnesota Vikings have experienced the heartbreak of going 0-4 in the Super Bowl (which they haven’t reached since 1976), but their new stadium should lessen the blow. U.S. Bank Stadium costs $1.1 billion and was designed by Dallas-based architecture firm HKS to reflect the culture of Minnesota. “When working on a major sports complex, we begin with a deep dive into the culture of the city and become more anthropologists than architects,” declares John Hutchings, the HKS principal architect who headed the project. In particular, he cited Nordic architecture and “angular shapes of ice that form in the winter on the Mississippi River” as inspirations, resulting in its uniquely steep roof.
