Over the course of his career, Antoni Gaudí changed the face of architecture, creating a distinctive array of buildings that have delighted visitors and designers in equal measure. An ARTnews article notes that seven of the buildings he designed are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and his work has been the subject of several films, including Hiroshi Teshigahara’s 1984 film Antonio Gaudí and the 2003 documentary God’s Architect: Antoni Gaudí.
The architect’s first commission in Barcelona, Casa Vicens, has stood for over a century as an exemplar of his work. It was initially designed as a summer house for the Vicens family, and now operates as a museum. But if you’ve ever dreamed of living in a Gaudí-designed space, there’s some encouraging news — provided a one-night stay is sufficient.
A new article at Dwell notes that Casa Vicens will open its doors to two guests later this year via Airbnb. Booking opens on July 12 at 10:00 EDT, and the cost is all of $1 for an overnight stay. As lodging costs for UNESCO World Heritage Sites go, it’s something of a bargain.
Airbnb has a page dedicated to more details about the promotion. The guests will also receive a tour of the museum, with insights into its renovation, and “a Gaudí-inspired Michelin star menu.” What exactly a Gaudí-inspired meal entails remains to be seen, but it sounds delicious.
For those intrigued by this, Airbnb offers a couple of points of clarification: “[H]ouse rules are in strict adherence with local COVID-19 guidelines, and those who request to book must live in the same household to minimize risk.”
Come July 12 or thereabouts, someone’s going to be very lucky. As architectural and culinary experiences go, this sounds enticing indeed.
