If you came of age in the 1980s and have a penchant for high-performance cars and the crossroads of science fiction and action, we’re guessing you might have spent some time watching Knight Rider. The show starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, who traveled the country embarking on action-packed missions with the aid of KITT, a sports car that housed an artificial intelligence. It didn’t hurt, too, that it had some of the greatest television theme music ever.
The original series ran from 1982 to 1986, and led to a number of spin-offs in the years and decades that followed. Rumors abound of another Knight Rider revival, with the likes of John Cena and director James Gunn having mentioned it in interviews. But it turns out that there might be another way to experience a Knight Rider reboot — and that’s by buying a detailed replica of KITT that’s now for sale.
Writing at AutoBlog, Jeremy Korzeniewski has the details. Auction site Bring A Trailer is currently selling a replica of KITT — though Korzeniewski notes that this one’s based on a 1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, whereas KITT itself was based on the 1982 model. And while the outside is streamlined and distinctive on its own, it’s in the car’s interior where the attention to detail — and the ’80s nostalgia — really comes to the forefront.
The KITT replica doesn’t lack for performance ability, either: it sports a 5.0-liter LB9 V8 engine. Several components are new, including its fuel pump and exhaust system. Bidding ends early Monday afternoon; as of this writing, the top bid is $30,000. The secret crime-fighting organization is sold separately.
