Last year brought with it the news that Porsche had commenced testing the electric version of its Macan SUV — and that the automaker planned to begin production in 2023. Right about here would be the moment to cue up the old adage about the best-laid plans of mice and men — because if you’ve been waiting for a Macan EV, you might need to wait a little bit longer.
Writing at Autoblog, Jonathon Ramsey points to some issues with the software for the electric Macan that suggest that it’ll be delayed until 2024 at the earliest.
As Ramsey points out, that there would be some sort of delay is something that’s been on the horizon for a while now. Over the summer, when he was still CEO of Porsche, Oliver Blume had made comments to the effect that delays were coming. The delays are due to problems developing the code that the Macan EV will rely on — as well as, potentially, a few other electric vehicles from within the Volkswagen Group.
This information comes via Porsche’s prospectus for their planned IPO. Autocar delved into it and found plenty of discussion of the code issues — including a warning that other Porsche models, “in particular BEV models of the 718 [Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman] and the Porsche Cayenne,” could be affected as well.
And so, the wait continues. The future of automobiles still looks like it’ll be an electric one — but it might take a little longer to get there than we’d expected.
