Ferrari, the last major holdout in the SUV craze, is about to get its Costco membership.
We’ve known the Italian sports car icon has been working on its first sport utility vehicle — reportedly called the Purosangue, which translates to “thoroughbred” or “pure blood” — for a while now, but new leaked images circulating on the internet reportedly offer the first real glimpse at what the Ferrari SUV will look like.
The photographs, which we first saw at Car and Driver, appear to show the front and rear of the Purosangue on the factory floor. As with most luxury carmakers who have beefed up in recent years, Ferrari seems to have had a tough time translating its normally svelte proportions. At first glance, the front end looks like they simply stuck one of their cars on top and some chunky bits on the bottom, while the back end looks like an amalgamation of the Aston Martin DBX and Ford Mustang Mach-E. But again, these photos haven’t been corroborated by the company, and they’re not very good either, so it’s hard to seriously judge the design.
Of course, that won’t stop people from weighing in on the design, with many likely coming to the conclusion that this car is “controversial” and “polarizing.” We would have agreed with that statement a few years ago, but when Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce and Bentley are all making SUVs, with Ferrari bringing up the rear, it’s hard to call this sacrilegious.
We’ll wait to make our final assessment until Ferrari releases official photos, which will hopefully be soon. As we noted last year, some speculated the SUV would be officially revealed in 2021, but COVID-related delays seemed to inevitably push that to 2022. Ferrari has now confirmed production will begin this year with deliveries starting in 2023. And now we wait.
