When Saturday Night Live starts its 46th season on Oct. 3, it’ll feature another celebrity playing off of Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump: as Vulture reports, Jim Carrey will be taking on the role of Joe Biden on the sketch show this year.
Lorne Michaels confirmed the news in a new interview with the publication about the forthcoming season. “You’ll see the same people. I mean, Maya Rudolph is coming back, and Alec [Baldwin] will be back,” he said. “And Jim Carrey is going to do Biden.”
Michaels revealed that the casting decision was a result of Carrey reaching out and expressing interest in the part. “It came down to discussions of what his take was,” he said. “He will give the part energy and strength, and hopefully it’s funny.”
Last year, three different people portrayed the former vice president on the show. Woody Harrelson appeared as Biden three times, and Jason Sudeikis — who portrayed Biden during the Obama administration when he was a cast member on the show — returned to reprise the role during an episode hosted by RuPaul. John Mulaney also played Biden when he hosted the show in March.
Last month, Harrelson told NME that he had to step away from the part due to scheduling conflicts. “I was approached two or three times but I couldn’t do it so I don’t know, maybe Lorne has moved on, which would probably be smart to have people who were definitely going to show up,” he said. “Because I don’t know, I wasn’t always going to be there, but I’d be open to doing it again of course. It’s so fun.”
