A New York-native who grew up 11 miles from Yankee Stadium, Harrison Bader is living his childhood dream. After five and a half seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, the center fielder was traded to the Yankees in August — and tonight gets a chance to play in a winner-take-all fifth game of the American League Division Series. As a Yankee, Bader is not only following in the footsteps of childhood idols like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, but he is also enjoying his NYC breakfast of choice: bacon, egg and cheese on a…blueberry bagel!? According to ESPN, the unorthodox morning meal is among his favorites in a city known for some great foods, but some might deem it questionable at best.
How you order your bagel is an age-old debate throughout the five boroughs. No matter if you like it extra toasted, scooped or with strawberry cream cheese, someone is going to have something to say about your bready breakfast of choice. When Sex and the City actor Cynthia Nixon was running for New York State governor, her bagel order sent people into an absolute tailspin. Like Bader’s, her preferred combo is sweet and savory and consists of lox, red onions, capers, tomato and cream cheese on a cinnamon-raisin bagel. It caused quite a stir on social media, with opinionated breakfast enthusiasts calling it everything from “criminal” to “horrifying.”
Sweet and salty food combos are widely celebrated — think the “Garrett Mix” of cheese and caramel popcorn and bacon wrapped dates. So why does it cause such an uproar when it comes to bagels? Maybe because we haven’t found one that isn’t awful yet, but obviously that point would be rebutted by Bader. And if the Yankees do win the series, even NYC’s staunchest food snobs might look the other way.
