Trevor Bauer has received a record suspension from Major League Baseball for violating the league’s policy on sexual assault and domestic violence. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that MLB had suspended Bauer for 324 games, the equivalent of two full seasons. This stems from accusations of sexual assault made against Bauer last summer.
Earlier this year, Bauer filed a lawsuit against Deadspin over the site’s coverage of the accusations.
As Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times noted, this is the longest suspension of its kind in Major League Baseball history. Shaikin also pointed out that Bauer’s contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers will expire before the end of the suspension — and that suspensions of this type are unpaid.
In a statement, Bauer disputed the league’s decision. “In the strongest possible terms, I deny committing any violation of the league’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy,” he wrote. “I am appealing this action and expect to prevail. As we have throughout this process, my representatives and I respect the confidentiality of the proceedings.”
This isn’t the only legal action Bauer is taking regarding the allegations that emerged last year. Earlier this week, USA Today reported that Bauer has filed a defamation lawsuit against the woman who accused him of sexual abuse, as well as against her attorney, Fred Thiagarajah.
